6,000 Trustpilot reviews in a custom Shopify design

Around 6,000 Trustpilot reviews, synced to Shopify and displayed in a custom theme design. I built the data sync and the components to match the Figma designs: product ratings, review sliders and review lists.

Server-side rendering replaces dynamically loaded Trustpilot widgets: review text is included in the HTML, readable by search engines and AI crawlers without JavaScript. The PDP rating is delivered with the page to avoid the previous layout shift.

View implementation
  • Trustpilot integration: importing and syncing reviews to Shopify as the data source for custom theme components.
  • Custom components: announcement bar, homepage review slider, footer badge, PDP rating and review list, all matching the Figma designs.
  • Product ratings on collection pages, in featured product sections and on other product cards.
  • Server-rendered HTML instead of dynamically loaded widgets. No significant impact from the review integration on the Lighthouse score.

At the time this case study was written, the relaunched store was not yet live.

From review requests to the cart drawer

Collecting new reviews and displaying them in the theme: my implementation for Landig includes custom post-purchase email templates, excluding orders based on a Shopify tag, and native Shopify discount codes as review incentives.

Custom ratings and review lists on PDPs and product cards, including the cart drawer and predictive search when content loads asynchronously. Review text is rendered server-side in the HTML, making it readable by search engines and AI crawlers without JavaScript.

  • Collecting new reviews: custom email templates, excluding specific orders by Shopify tag, and Shopify discount codes for submitted reviews.
  • Theme components: PDP rating and review list, ratings on collection pages, search results, product cards and featured product sections.
  • Asynchronous integration: ratings in the cart, cart drawer and predictive search without a full page reload.
  • Server-rendered review text in the HTML. No significant impact from the review integration on the Lighthouse score.

At the time this case study was written, the relaunched store was not yet live.

From Shopify developer to social proof specialist

About me

I have been developing and optimising Shopify stores for over eight years. Today, I focus on social proof: putting existing reviews to work, collecting new ones, using live purchase signals, and making it all fit the store's design.

I combine design and psychology with the technology behind them: data integration, theme development, server-side rendering, SEO, GEO and loading times.

The technical foundation is something I developed myself: reviews and purchase signals are stored directly in Shopify and displayed in the theme. This includes syncing existing reviews, aggregating real-time purchase signals, and customisable app blocks for displaying them in the store.

You work directly with me. I analyse your store, plan the improvements and handle the technical implementation.

I write about social proof on Shopify on LinkedIn.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep my current review app?

Yes, no problem. My technical implementation works with any mainstream review app and keeps the data synced smoothly in real time. Alternatively, I can set up the new integration to collect new reviews as well. Both systems can run alongside each other during the transition.

How does the technical implementation work?

I integrate reviews and purchase signals as Shopify-native data and build their display directly into your theme using Liquid, CSS and JavaScript. The data comes from the Shopify app FiveOh Reviews on Metaobjects, which I developed specifically for this purpose: syncing existing reviews, collecting new ones and providing app blocks. Review text is rendered server-side and included in the HTML without JavaScript. I adapt the design and behaviour of the sections and blocks to your store, including dynamically loaded areas such as the cart drawer and predictive search. I work in the preview theme; the implementation only goes live after your approval.Explore the app and its features

What additional costs are there?

None for the Audit and Blueprint. For Implementation, the monthly app fees are not included. You can find the current plans on the app website.View app pricing

Can you work with my theme and agency?

I review your theme and customise sections and blocks with Liquid, CSS and JavaScript. If your agency will handle implementation, the Blueprint gives them detailed technical specifications. If your current tech stack has limitations, I explain them and the possible alternatives.

What if I don't have many reviews yet?

Then the focus is on collecting new reviews and making good use of the ones you have. I set up post-purchase emails and review forms, import existing reviews, and enable moderation and replies. Thresholds and fallbacks define what appears on products with few or no reviews.

How are the results measured?

I compare measurements before and after implementation: Lighthouse, delivered HTML, structured data and technical SEO. You measure conversion and revenue in your store's own figures. An increase in those metrics is not part of the delivery guarantee.

Let's talk about your store.
